Due Wed 4/25 - Jigsaw Activity

1) Give a quick explanation of the topic and propose a debate resolution of the topic.
The topic that I read was “protection of children.” This was about the first
Amendment. What it mostly talked about was how children should change, and not let kids view inappropriate things like porn. To me my resolution is to censor children from viewing things that are for adults. I think it should be against the law.
2) Explain why it is an important topic. You choose what to write about, but here are some suggestions if you are stuck.
This topic is important because the effect that it does to children affects them and society as well. So if children are not being censored then the society will be harmed. So children need to be censored because they are our future and they shouldn’t watch things like porn.
3) Write one or two sentences that explain a good point made by the con side and one or two sentences that explain a good point made by the pro side
Pro Side: One good point that the pro side made for this is that children should not have the same rights as an adult. This is because the children are still growing and everything they do, learn, and see will affect them sooner or later. Things that affect children are bad words, porn, and negative things.
Con Side: A good point that the con side made is that the 1st Amendment states that they guarantee everybody’s rights. Witch means that anybody can do anything they want no matter how bad and harmful it is.

Due Wed 3/28 - Plato assignment

1. Why do you think Plato (or anyone else) would want to censor Homer (yesterday the question was about Hesiod)?
I think that Plato wants to censor Homer because the Iliad shows a lot of things you shouldn’t teach your children. For example Achilles is always killing people, he cries because his war prize is taken away, they use words that shouldn’t be used like punk, and the Iliad is full of anger and revenge. People don’t want their kids reading this because it sets a bad example like Hesiod with the gods. So I think that this is why someone will try to censor Homer.
2. According to Plato, what are some aspects of poetry that should be banned and why?
Some aspects of poetry that should be banned are to stop talking about the after life, misrepresenting god with evil, the names in the underworld, and description of reputable characters. This is because it sends out the wrong message and it’s unsuitable for the ears of children.
3.What should poetry “teach” and why?
I don’t think that poetry should teach only one thing. I think poetry should teach a variety of things. For example it should about god, people, justice, law/government, culture, and society, because people need to know this, and it will help out the leaders to know this information.
4. If you were talking to Plato what would you say to him? Do you agree with his ideas? Do you think poetry, or literature in general, should be put to the purposes that he says it should?
If I was talking to Plato I would tell him that I do agree with him. I think that poets should not write about the gods and heroes being bad. Also about people harming each other, and I do think it’s giving kids a bad example. So I would agree with him and tell him that I think he’s right, and I would follow his laws/principals.

Due Tue 3/27 - Republic Assignment

1. Why do you think Plato (or anyone else) would want to censor Hesiod?
I think that Plato would censor Hesiod because there’s probably something that Hesiod did wrong that Plato didn’t want people to know about. Or maybe it was not as important as other things that happened.
2. What are Homer and Hesiod guilty of?
Homer is guilty of misrepresenting gods, and it is not right so its better to not say anything about it, because it gives an idea that gods were bad when there good.
3. What are the two main characteristics of “god” and what are the laws/principles of story telling based on those characteristics?
The two main characteristics of god are that god is perfect in beauty and goodness, and that god is without deceit or falsehood. So the principles that have to be followed are first that God is the cause, not of all things, but only of good, and that when you speak of god they shall not represented as using magic to disguise themselves nor as playing us false in word or deed.
4. Compare what you wrote in your personal reflection above (#1) with what Plato wrote. How close were you to what Plato wrote?
My personal reflection was somehow true and had to do with what Plato wrote. This is because it is true that Hesiod did something wrong, he misrepresented god in his play. But I was wrong about it not being important as other things because god is a very important subject.

Due Thr 3/22 - Prep for Seminar

In your opinion, is it ever right to harm somebody? Why or why not? What would Socrates and/or Thrasymachus say in response to your answer?
I think that it is not right to harm anyone. But it is sometimes ok, but only as self defense. This is because if you harm someone they will harm you back its like karma. Its not right to harm someone unless they harm you first wich will be self defense. I think weather you like it or not you have to harm someone if they attack you because you cant just stand there and do nothing that’s why its okay to harm someone at one point. But it should not go to the point where you kill the person because you don’t have a right to take someone’s life away. I think that Socrates will probably response by agreeing because of the believe that sometimes you have to deviate from the law for justice.

Due wed 3/21 - Republic Assignment

1. In your opinion, how can acting “right” (i.e. justly) help or harm the achievement of happiness? In your answer you need to first establish, in true Socratic fashion, what you mean by "right" (justice) and what you mean by happiness. What do you think Socrates would say about what you wrote and/or what do you think Thrasymachus would say?
In my opinion acting right can help or harm the person it depends on what brings happiness to them. For example if following the law doing the right things make you happy then acting right helps your achievement of happiness. But if you’re a rebel you like to break the law than acting right harms your achievement of happiness. To me right means doing what the law and justice says, and happiness is what makes you feel good and happy. I think that Thrasymachus will probably say that this is true because to him justice is the interest of the strong witch make the strong happy, but like I said if following the law doing the right thing makes you happy then there’s no problem.

Due Tue 3/20 - Republic Assignment

1. In this first part, what are Socrates’ main argument(s) against the idea that justice is whatever the strong (i.e. the government) says it is?
Socrates’ main arguments against the idea that justice is whatever the strong say are that the exercise of any skill is, as such, disinterested, and that right is for the interest of the strong, so the person’s actions positive way because when they make justice it will suit there own interest.
2. What are Thrasymahcus’ two main points and what are Socrates’ two main points in response?
Thrasymahcus two main points are that political power is the exploitation of a class by another, and that justice is the interest of the stronger party, injustice is the interest and profit of oneself. Socrates’ two main points in response were that each professional skill brings its own peculiar benefit, and that no one really wants to look for other types of authority.
3. In your opinion, does injustice pay? Why or why not? What would Socrates and/or Thrasymachus say in response to your answer.
I think that injustice does not pay off most of the time. Or at least what you do get paid is not enough to help you out or make you happy. And when justice is done since your not a strong person then it pays to the strong and not you. Thrasymahcus will probably agree with me because my idea comes from what he said, ‘Justice is the interest of the stronger party, injustice the interest and profit of oneself.”

Due Fri 3/16 - The Republic Part 1 Section 2 pp. 8-15

1. In your opinion, is Polemarchus definition of justice, derived from the poet Simonedes, an improvement from his father’s definition?
In my opinion Polemarchus’ definition of Justice is derived from the poet Simonides. Because both talk about helping friends and harming enemies.
2. What is Simonides definition of justice? Has Polemarchus interpreted him correctly?
Simonides definition of justice is that justice is to benefit one’s friends and harm one’s enemies. I think that Polemarchus has interpreted Simonides correctly, because what Polemarchus’ definition of justice is to help friends and harm enemies basically what Simonides said.
3. What problem does Socrates see in the phrase, “helping one’s friends and harming ones enemies”? Why is this not an accurate definition of justice?
Socrates thinks that the phrase is wrong because what if your friends are actually your enemies and your enemies are your friends. Or that you picked the wrong friends because you never know who your true friends are and who your enemies are what if your enemies are good people, and that’s why that’s not a good definition of justice.

Due Fri 3/16 - Republic Assignment

1. Who are Cephalus and Polemarchus?
Cephalus is Polemarchus’ father. He believes in the traditional like religion, business, and he thinks that justice is the law. Polemarchus is Cephalus’ son he thinks for himself, using reason from his dad’s social convention.
2. What is the profession of Cephalus?
Cephalus’ doesn’t have a real profession. He got the money from his grandfather and father.
3. What was Cephalus doing right before the discussion that took place?
Cephalus was sacrificing something before the discussion.
4. According to Cephalus, what are the virtues of old age?
According to Cephalus the virtues of old age are not plagued by desire for sex.
5. What is Cephalus’ view of justice?
Cephalus’ view of justice is to be truthful and pay your debts.
6. What is Socrates response?
Socrates response is that it is not always right to be truthful.
7. Do you agree with Cephaus or with Socrates? Why? If you don't agree with either of them, write about which one you think makes the stronger arguement - even if you think it is not "right" - and why?
I don’t agree with neither Socrates nor Cephalus when it comes to justice, because sometimes you need to lie but its better to say the truth. Cephalus believes you always have to say the truth and Socrates thinks that you shouldn’t, because it’s not always right so I agree with both of them, at times, even though I know that the right thing to do is say the truth and not lie.

Due Fri 3/16 - Personal Reflection

I think that a friend is someone who is always there for you no matter what. Someone you can talk to at all times and that most of the time agrees with you. You should be nice to a friend and act friendly with them. A enemy is someone who does things to hurt you or to affect you in a negative way. I think that you shouldn’t really care about them but you need to always be in the lookout making sure they don’t do anything to you. Like the saying goes “Keep your friends close but your enemies closer.” I don’t think you should harm your enemies because you don’t want to be a bad person by hurting them.

Due Thur 3/15 - Similie of the Cave Reading Questions

1. What happens to the prisoner when he gets outside? Why does this happen to the prisoner?
When the prisoner gets outside of the cave he would be dazzled to see properly the objects he once saw in shadows. In my opinion this happens because he has never seen the real thing. He has lived living a lie, and finally he sees the truth so he is dazzled.
2. Why would the prisoners kill someone who is trying to lead them outside?
The prisoner would try to kill anyone who tried to liberate them and lead them out of the cave because to them the shadows are the real thing, because they have lived believing that there whole life and there not willing to be told different.
3. What is special about “the intelligible region” and why is it important for public servants/political leaders?
The intelligible region is important because it controls source of truth and intelligence. It is important for public servants and political leaders because they don’t make a fool of themselves and try to make the shadow people believe in there world.
4. What is wrong with having uneducated people run society? What is wrong with having intellectuals (i.e. well-educated people) run society?
It’s wrong for uneducated people to run society because they have no single aim in life so there always directed to do things, and they have no knowledge of the truth. Having intellectuals is wrong too because they wont take practical actions of their accord, and they think there better than everyone by living out of the real world.
5. What is the job of a lawmaker and how is a lawmaker supposed to influence the best minds?
The job of a lawmaker is to create laws. A lawmaker is supposed to influence the best minds by sharing their labors and reward people, and to compel the best minds, and to ascend to the vision of the good.

Due Wed 3/14 - Personal Reflection (Plato)

When I was a little girl in pre-school, one of my friends told me that we were eating ants on a log. So I thought that I should never eat it because maybe we were easting ants. Until one day my mom told me to try it and it might be good and that ants on a log was just the name really it was celery with peanut butter and raisins. So I finally tried it and it was good and now I eat it as a snack. It did change my outlook on things because now I always try new things instead of just avoiding things, and saying everything is gross with out trying it first.

Iliad Reading Book 16 Pages 434-441

Iliad Reading Book 16
Pages 434-441 Lines 800 – End

Questions:
Will Agamemnon go to battle now that Patroclus died ?
Apollo and Zeus are fighting for the Trojans or the Greeks?

Summary and Main Points:

1. Patroclus killed a lot of people there all mentioned in lines 809-815.
2. Apollo told Patroclus to go back.
3. Zeus told Hector to keep fighting and not stop and maybe Apollo might give him glory.
4. Theres a battle scene were the warriors are fighting.
5. Apollo took Patroclus’ helmet off.
6. Patroclus dies.

How do you think Achilles will respond? Predict what's going to happen next.
(I’m not really sure what the question means or what exactly Achilles is responding to)
I think Achilles is going to finally going to go to battle. Because Patroclus just got killed in battle so he’s going to go in memory of him.

Personal Reflection (Inability to forgive)

Personal Reflection:
One time that my inability to forgive took me to a negative consequence was when I didn’t want to forgive my cousin for telling my mom on me. The only reason I didn’t want to forgive her was because I didn’t snitch on her so I thought she wouldn’t snitch on me. That’s what got me mad. But not forgiving her just got me into more trouble because I was really mean to her in front of people and I wouldn’t talk to her so she felt bad and our parents noticed. So I got in trouble and they toke my phone away, and computer privileges because they said I was being really bitchy and rood so I had to learn some matters.
Similarities or Differences to Achilles’ Case:
My case was different to Achilles’ case because I only got in trouble and I couldn’t really do anything about it. Unlike Achilles he stepped up and got really angry at Agamemnon and didn’t go to battle.

Iliad Reading-Book 16 (Beggining)

Iliad Reading-Book 16
Pages 412-421 Lines 1-333
1. Patroclus proposed to Achilles that he want to take leadership over his army. He wants to take lead and tell Achilles’ group what to do. So Patroclus wants to go to war with the Trojans. Achilles response to his proposal was that he will let him go and gives him permission to lead his group only for this war because Patroclus must come back after the battle. Achilles grant Patroclus’ request because he hates Agamemnon and so that Patroclus can win great honor and glory for Achilles so he’s taking most of the credit.

2. When Patroclus says that Achilles is “cursed with his own courage” I think Patroclus means that Achilles’ is cursed because of his own courage. So it goes back to Phoenix telling him to learn how to forgive. Maybe if Achilles lets go of all the anger he has he won’t be cursed. But Achilles is not a coward so I don’t really think that he is cursed, because Achilles has a lot of courage and braveness. He fights his own battles but he doesn’t want to fight this one because he hates Agamemnon.

3. Words I did not understand:
a) Myrmidons - one of the warlike people of ancient Thessaly who accompanied Achilles to the Trojan War.
b) Vagabond - leading an unsettled or carefree life or wandering from one place to another without a home
c) Forged – To form or make something

Iliad assignment Book 9 pp. 266-275

Iliad assignment Book 9 pp. 266-275
1. Question: Do you think Phoenix plays a big part of Achilles’ life since he raised him? Why or why not?

2. My opinion on Achilles did personally change a lot. The reason it changed is because it seems to me like he changed a lot since book 1. Now he’s a lot more stubborn and selfish. He’s stubborn because even though Agamemnon is giving him so many prizes he still won’t go to war. Also Phoenix has been telling him to help out his friends and he won’t its pretty messed up the way he’s acting, he’s still mad at Achilles and according to him he’s fighting for what he believes in. Also he’s suppose to be in Troy because he’s trying to be remembered in a good and powerful way but right now that’s not the way people are looking at him.

3. Persuasive strategies:

What pages and lines: Page 266 Lines 527-529
Who is speaking: Phoenix is speaking.
What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: He’s speaking to Achilles he’s telling him to fight with the Greeks and he’s asking him if that’s what he has taught him all his life, and if he has a heart.
What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to emotion/ethics.
Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to emotion because he’s making him angry by questioning him but its also appeal to ethics because its making Achilles think about what phoenix is saying and he’s wondering if he’s doing the right thing.

What pages and lines: Page 268 Lines 598-614
Who is speaking: Phoenix is speaking.
What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: Phoenix is speaking to Achilles. He’s telling him to learn how to forgive or else a lot of bad things will happen to him and he’s going to carry that anger with him for ever so its better to let it go now before its too late.
What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to ethics/reason.
Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to ethics because Achilles needs to decide weather he should forgive Agamemnon or not and its appeal to reason because he has to pick if its better for him to just stop being angry and go to war and accept all the gifts.

What pages and lines: Page 273 Lines 777-785
Who is speaking: Phoenix is speaking.
What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: He’s speaking to Achilles he’s telling him to respect his people, family, father, and himself.
What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to ethics.
Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to ethics because Achilles needs to think about what he’s doing and decide weather sitting out is the best thing to do because he needs to respect and make his decision fast.

Iliad assignment Book 9 pp. 251-266

Iliad assignment Book 9 pp. 251-266

  1. Question: Do you think Achilles will accept Agamemnon’s offer?
  2. My opinion on Agamemnon does change in away after reading Book 9. This is because in book 1 Agamemnon is very prideful he went to Troy thinking that he was going to win the war for sure that it was going to be a really easy war. But now he realized that he loosing the war. That he needs Agamemnon and his pride and honor is slowly going away. He is going to apologize to Achilles he’s practically begging him to fight for him and giving him prizes but Achilles doesn’t want to accept them. He has turned into a coward because he wants to go back to Greece and just stop the war because he’s about to loose to the Trojans.
  3. Persuasive Strategies:

What pages and lines: Page 256 Lines 187-193

Who is speaking: Agamemnon is speaking

What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: He is talking to Nestor he tells him that he will give Achilles lots of gifts only if he ends his anger and admits that Agamemnon is a better man and a better king.

What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to emotion.

Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of that because he’s trying to convince Achilles and Nestor that he as in Agamemnon is a better man and king. Also he’s being stubborn and trying to make the mad because he knows Achilles does not believe this and he’s very prideful too.

What pages and lines: Page 252 Lines 30-35

Who is speaking: Agamemnon is speaking

What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: Hes speaking to all the Argives he tells them to leave Troy and to go back to Greece, because they will never win or take over Troy.

What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to reason.

Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to reason because Agamemnon is trying to convince all the Greeks to leave Troy, before they die and loose the war.

What pages and lines: Page 260 lines 309-315

Who is speaking: Odysseus is speaking

What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: He’s speaking to Achilles he’s saying that he is messed up for letting his friends die. Also to think about how his father would feel and the advice he gave him.

What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy of appeal to ethics.

Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to ethics because it gets Achilles thinking of sitting out the war and if it’s really the right thing to do at this point.

Iliad Reflection – Book One

Iliad Reflection – Book One
Question: If you were an ancient Greek, which of the following statements would you agree with A or B?
A) Achilles’ rage is justified and I support his decision not to fight, even if it means the Greeks might lose lots of men, or even the war itself.
B) Agamemnon is the commander, as such he is in the right, and I support his decision to ask for Achilles’ war prize Briseis – even if it means that Achilles will sit out the war.

If I was an ancient Greek I would agree with Achilles rage because he has what it takes to be a leader. Agamemnon is a coward because he sends people to take care of his own business. So he doesn’t have the whole package to be a leader. “Never once did you arm with the troops and go to battle or risk an ambush packed with Achaea’s picking men-you lack the courage, you can see death coming.” (pg.85) I would agree with him even if it meant that lots of Greeks would die. This is because then it would mean that Agamemnon’s soldiers weren’t trained good enough, and if they see there leader not doing anything then why would they.

Disagreements and Fights

Disagreements and Fights
“I got money in the bank shorty what you drank” I heard my cell phone ring that was my ring tone. So I picked up and it was my best friend. We talked and she told me that some girl was talking about me and she was saying this and that. I got really mad because I knew this person. So I told her I was going to call her back instead I came to her house and we got ready. I remember putting on my black baggy Dickies. With a white airbrushed t-shirt that said “Shy Girl” in old English writing, and my Nike Cortez’s. My friend was wearing the same except her t-shirt said “Bouncy” We started walking down the street heading straight to that girls house. When we arrived to her house we saw that her mom’s car wasn’t there we knew she was alone and we caught her off guard. We just wanted to give her a little scare and show her that no one messes with us. So we knocked on the door and then ran and ducked so she wouldn’t see who was knocking. Then she slowly opened the door and peeked a little then fully opened it. That’s when me and bouncy popped out of no where. We went up to her and we started talking all this crap. She had used personal things to insult me but they weren’t that bad only one person knows all my secrets and that’s my older sister. So I decided to attack her even harder. The way of doing this is by using her mom and dad. Her dad was dead and her mom was a drunkie. She felt so bad she started to cry. At that I point I knew I had crossed the line. I felt really bad that’s probably one of the only times that I regret saying what I said or even defending myself. It got to the point I said sorry and actually meant it.

Revised Descriptive Writing Assignment

Revised Descriptive Writing Assignment
I look out my window and I saw the fire men coming toward my house. They looked at me with confusion and hatred in their eyes. I can see the hot red fire in their black eyes it looks so real like if it was a reflection of what is about to happen. I’m not sure what they were so mad I’m not ready to leave my books behind or to give them up but I know I can’t run away with them. I can feel the blood rushing through my veins as if there in a hurry to get home. My knees start shaking in terror. My heart is pounding, I feel like it’s about to jump out of my heart not of joy but of disappointment. I’m not willing to give up my beliefs and just let all my knowledge go to waist as if its not important so I know what I have to do I have to stick up for my beliefs. Then I hear the door bell ring. Not really knowing what’s going to happen to me I walk with fear in my legs to the door. It feels like I’m walking up a mountain with all this weight on me it feels like I can never get to the door. I see it so far but it’s actually so close. When I turn that door knob ready to open something tells me not to but I do it anyway. I turn that cold silver knob slowly and then you hear a squeaky noise like when you walk up old stair but it’s actually the door opening. It finally opened and I see him there. It’s like the nightmare everyone wishes they will never have. His boss tells him what to do but I knew what I had to do. I just stood there like a hard stone that could not move not even with the most powerful and strong men pushing on me. Then I see the lighter he’s about to drop it I know this is the last noon that I my eyes will ever get to see. My life is over.

Austin I liked your blog entry because it explains exactly why you got mad a t Michael. But I was kind of confused on what got you mad at the beginning because I didn’t know if Downloading the Virus got you mad or not being able to download it but either way it was a good blog entry.
Daniel I liked your blog because you explain what gets you mad and show examples. I can relate to your blog because I’m Mexican and I know its get annoying when people think this about us, it gets me mad too. And its not only people at school who say it. It is all over the U.S. and TV. Its also true how all people are different and race doesn’t matter.

My Rage- Cause

My Rage- Cause
I still remember that day when my best friend and I started walking down the block. All we were doing was going to the park to have fun. There’s nothing wrong with that right? When two of my friends and my older sister popped out of no where we said hi to each other and started walking all together. When we were about to cross the street my best friends mom pulled up in the Expedition. Her mom started going crazy on us she had followed us from my house. Her mom thought we were going to hook up with my friends and do things we were not suppose to at the park. When all we were doing was talking we didn’t even plan to meet them but she didn’t believe us. I hated how she started judging my friend with out even knowing them or taking the time to ask what we were doing. Next thing I know she’s blaming all these things on me. Saying she’s going to press charges on me for no reason. That I’m going to go to jail along with my sister because that’s were we belong. That me and my sister where just too little bad asses. That I’m nothing more than a gang member and a flirt to everyone. That I had no future. That it was my fault her daughter was the way she was. Ever since that day I have never seen my best friend again. I talked to her once or twice on the phone with out her mom knowing. I call her house and if her mom picks up I have to hang up or else ill end up in jail or at least that’s what she says. This is all because she miss judge me and now I cant talk to her daughter. I do miss her. I and she had been through so much together we had so many good times and now I feel like half of me is gone. Everything got thrown away. So much happened in so little time. Ever since that day I changed a lot I went the wrong path and now its up to me to change it. And I have learned that getting mad takes me no where but into trouble.

My heart is pounding I feel like it’s about to jump out of my heart not of joy but of disappointment. I’m not willing to give up my believes and just let all my knowledge go to waist as if its not important so I know what I have to do I have to stick up for my believes. It finally opens and I see him there it’s like the nightmare everyone wishes they will never have. His boss tells him what to do but I knew what I had to do. I just stood there like a hard stone that could not move not even with the most powerful and strong men pushing on me. Then I see the lighter he’s about to drop it I know this is the last noon that I my eyes will ever get to see my life is over.

Descriptive Words On My Dread Blog:
1. Evil-It’s a scary word and it describes how the place is.
2. Dark- It gives you an example of how the place is.
3. Weak- This was a good word in the sentence because it was descriptive and it was better than just saying tired.
Descriptive Words On Group Dread Blogs:
1. Austin I liked this paragraph because you have no clue what you hate until you get to the end. For example at first I thought it was a pencil but then I figured it was a book. Bad Smell- this was descriptive because it used the 5 senses.
2. Daniel I liked this blog because it is very descriptive you have really good words in here. And you had the 5 senses witch helped me imagine and feel what was going on. Also I liked your topic I think fear itself was very good.
Ice Cubes - I liked this simile because instead of saying it was cold ice cubes made it seem more realistic and interesting.
3. Kevin your blog was very good it was very descriptive. Even though your never going to get a date with Jessica Alba or Pamela Anderson you can keep on dreaming. I liked how you used similes like nails scratching on chalkboard instead of a bad noise. I also liked the noises you used like “BEEP, CRUNCH, BLAH, AND WAKE UP”

Question: What universal needs or desires are represented in this story?
What needs/desires might be particular to the Greeks?
Answer: In this story some of needs and desires are power, reproduction, leadership, strength, brave, evil, ruler, and revenge. Some needs and desires that might be specifically for Greeks might be leadership, power, and strength. The reason I chose these words are because of things that the gods did that made me feel like they had to have some evil, revenge, and strength to do. For example someone would never lock up there kids, or eat them, or even kill it was as if they were fighting over ruler ship witch they were because they always wanted to be the best and greatest god.

Descriptive Writting (Frightening Scene)

During page 35-45 there was a good scene where the lady gets killed when she gets burned with her house because of books. This was a good scene because other characters would have been scared to die like she did. So they would of probably left there books and saved them self’s. This scene was also good because it was very descriptive like when its burning by saying everything was musty blackness instead of there was smoke.

Descriptive Words:
1. Musty (pg. 36)
2. Blackness (pg. 36)
3. White Pigeon (pg. 37)
4. Drenched (pg. 38)
5. Poison (pg. 41)

Words I Don’t Know:
1. Jargon
2. Fathoms

Fahrenheit 451pp.154-165
The only question I have is why did they pretend to kill Montag and will Montag ever go back and live his old life instead of living in nature. What I think Montag meant by saying “And when they ask us what we are doing , you can say, We’re remembering” is that they can remember the books, and their old way of living and how things were before they stopped burning books. This is a good quote because it explains that they remember what happened and he’s not going back to being a firemen because he has a mind of his own just like all the other men with him.

Descriptive Paragraph (Dread)

Descriptive Paragraph (Dread)
Something that I dread is death. The reason that I fear death is because I’m not sure what’s going to happen to me, where I’m going to go or how. I’m scared that there’s a beautiful place where everyone is happy and no one has any worries called heaven and I’m going to stay here in earth. I’m also scared of going to the worse place ever with all these mean and ugly people were nothing other than evil exists. Hell will be a really bad place to go. It’s not only what’s after death that I fear but also the way I die. I wonder if I’m just going to go to a deep sleep and never wake up or if someone’s going to kill me with no regrets or if I’m going to get really sick and die or if I’m going to suffer while I die. I’m scared of everything about death I imagine death coming toward me in a very dark room and I just run as fast as I can until my legs get really weak and death comes and gets me. I wish death will never come for me.

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 138-154
I understand the book a little more but I don’t really have any questions. Im just wondering if Montag will ever get caught.
Montag was a guy who burned books because that was his job. He enjoyed doing it too. He would do what ever it takes to do his job because he loved fire. But this man has changed now. Now he has became a guy who actually likes books now and has a mind of his own. He has went as far as to kill his commanding officer. He doesn’t burn book anymore he actually keeps them. He ran away from the law and the government cant find him. He use to live in a house but the house was burned because of books and now his only house is nature. He has his own government now and no one gives him commands.

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 126-137

The lines in the story that I liked were in page 127 paragraph 4. I liked this paragraph because it was very descriptive. This paragraph talks about the beetles and what they were doing. The words used were very descriptive and specific and helped me imagine it in my head. For example some of the words used were rushing, roaring, whining, high thunder, skimming, and 120 mph. The lines used in this paragraph were all really good and they cached my attention when I was reading.

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 110-125

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 110-125
These pages were mostly about how Mildred had to do with Montags report and how his house got burned. During the fire Montag murdered Beatty. A sentence that strikes me is on page 117. “The books leapt and danced like roasted birds, their wings ablaze with red and yellow feathers.” I like this sentence because it uses figurative language and very good descriptive words. And it makes it a lot more interesting and it helps you picture the fire in your head.

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 91-110

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 91-110
The two main parts of these pages are when Montag goes back to work and turns in the stolen book to Beatty. Then he brings up a dream he had. In the dreamhe talk about how him and Montag were talking and they both were talking like if they had read books. Montag talked about literature and he talked about quotes. This shows that Beatty has read books before. Another main point was when he read the poem “Dover Beach” from the book he stole to his wife and friends. Mildred thinks more about what’s going to happen to her than to what the poem is saying. In page 99 on the last paragraph. There’s a lot of adjectives and verbs to make the paragraph more interesting. This is a very descriptive paragraph. For example the first sentence makes you feel and imagine the room. It says “The room was blazing hot, he was all fire, he was all coldness; they sat in the middle of an empty desert with three chairs and him standing, swaying, and him waiting for Mrs., Phelps to stop straightening her dress hem and Mrs. Bowles to take her fingers away from her hair.” This sentence made me go over it again because I wasn’t sure what “he was all fire, he was all coldness” meant. But the words were very descriptive and made you imagine it in your head.

Descriptive Paragraph

Descriptive Paragraph
I hear my favorite song and I look at my pocket I see my phone is ringing so I pick up. it’s the home girl and she tells me there’s a party on Friday. She asks if I’m going to go and I say “of course.” You know I cant miss a party because this party girl loves to have fun. I wake up every morning thinking about it. It’s the only topic my friends talk about at lunch. We plan what were going to wear what were going to do and where were going to sleep. I love parties to me its what keeps me going. The love I have for them is bigger than a fat kid with cake. I cant wait its barely Tuesday and I can already imagine it. As I think about it I feel my heart beating really fast and I feel butterflies in my stomach. I imagine it I know its like all the other parties but every time they get even better and better. When I get to the party all my friends are going to be there I first go and say “wuz up” to everyone. Then I hit the dance floor with all my friends. It feels so good just feeling the beat of the music and just dancing to it. When you dance you don’t care about anything its like all the stress goes away and you just have fun without thinking of anything. And that is why I cant wait until Friday I don’t think I’m going to have fun I know I’m going to have fun.

A question that I have is “Why does Beatty hate books so much?” and “Why is Mildred acting so strangely?”
(According to Faber) The plan was to make copies of books and burry them. But it wont work because captain Beatty will find out and they would get caught. Something that is missing is information and action. This is because there’s no books and people don’t get the knowledge there suppose to and their own opinions.

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 71-80

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 71-80
The thing that I’m mostly confused about is how Montag has books hidden in his attic and Beatty knows about them but doesn’t really say anything about it even though Montag Is a fireman and his job is to burn books. Why is he allowed to have books but no one else is?
When Montag says that books "point, one way or another, to Clarisse?" I think he says this because books have ideas, make you think, and make you have opinions. And Clarisse wasn’t like everyone else she always had something to say, she always had questions to be answered, she was very curious, and she had her own opinion and way of thinking just like the books make people feel and think. I think that books will get the people out of "the cave" because they will have their own opinions and thoughts. The cave to me means how everyone thinks and how they all have the same opinions and no one thinks for their own. Its just how their society is build and how everyone was raised

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 40-68

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 40-68 (Perspective of captain Beatty)
Question: Is it better to be ignorant and happy OR is it better to be aware, educated and disturbed at the world?
Hi. Im captain Beatty this state does not need educated smart people all we need is for everyone to be happy. No one should be smart that is why books are not allowed. Because we don’t want stupid people picking those books up and thinking of ideas to make things better in the state. This state is good as it is and no one should change it. There’s nothing wrong with everyone being happy with no worries. Just imagine that stupid girl just got killed but that’s what she gets for trying to make the impossible things possible. That girl tried to get things inside peoples head and for what for nothing because no one will do what she said no one actually thinks, Because no one is as smart as the government that girl didn’t know what she was doing by having her own opinion everyone is suppose to be the same. I’m pretty sure no one wants to be like her so they should just mind their own business and be happy that their still alive and no one should question my authority.

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 21-40

One thing I find confusing in these pages is who is Beatty, and why didn’t the lady in the house want to leave why did she want to stay there? Clarisse is more mature then Mildred according to Montag because Clarisse is not like everyone else. She always has something to say and I t seems like her and Montag communicate better then him and his wife. Clarisse doesn’t like to kill people like kids her age, she asks a lot of questions, has a different way of thinking, and she likes to watch people and meet people with her social skills. Shes not very dark, and brainwashed like everyone else there. She is helping Montag realize things, and is making him think twice about his life for example when she asked if he was happy. People in the novel are different from people now and days. The people are different because you can read books and before you couldn’t. You don’t see young girls walking at 1 in the morning. Its not a normal thing to kill at a young age, or to start a fire. If you started a fire now you would go to jail and in the book nothing happens to them. But then again there’s people now that do start fire that do kill and that have only one way of thinking but most of these people are criminals. And that’s what makes it different.

Fahrenheit 451 pp. 3-21

The novel so far started off really good but it got confusing as kept reading. One question that I have is why does Montag laugh about everything Clarisse says? What I find confusing is why do these firemen even exists and why do they burn things? Well Montag and his wife are distant from each other. The author conveys this by talking about how Montag imagines his wife waiting for him in bed because it had been a while this had happened. This shows there distanced because a normal married couple will wait for each other daily. Also the way they talk to each other show how they don’t really have good communication going on.

Student Response To Description #1 (Dread)

This piece of writing is actually very interesting. This is because it is very descriptive, detailed, and there’s always something there to catch your attention. When you read this you can picture every little thing in your head. Another thing that makes this very interesting is that it has a lot of metaphors so it gets you thinking on why the writer chose the comparisons he used. In my opinion I think that the author’s mood or impression he was trying to convey is a very depressing, dark, nervous, dread feeling and as if the character didn’t want to do what he was doing. As if he was being forced. “Shuffle my feet” The author showed nervousness in this piece of writing by using the word shuffle. And he showed a depressing feeling by using the quote “Peeking behind the darkness.” This quote also relates to nervousness in a way. I liked this writing piece but it was sometimes confusing and I had to read it over a couple times.
