Iliad assignment Book 9 pp. 266-275

Iliad assignment Book 9 pp. 266-275
1. Question: Do you think Phoenix plays a big part of Achilles’ life since he raised him? Why or why not?

2. My opinion on Achilles did personally change a lot. The reason it changed is because it seems to me like he changed a lot since book 1. Now he’s a lot more stubborn and selfish. He’s stubborn because even though Agamemnon is giving him so many prizes he still won’t go to war. Also Phoenix has been telling him to help out his friends and he won’t its pretty messed up the way he’s acting, he’s still mad at Achilles and according to him he’s fighting for what he believes in. Also he’s suppose to be in Troy because he’s trying to be remembered in a good and powerful way but right now that’s not the way people are looking at him.

3. Persuasive strategies:

What pages and lines: Page 266 Lines 527-529
Who is speaking: Phoenix is speaking.
What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: He’s speaking to Achilles he’s telling him to fight with the Greeks and he’s asking him if that’s what he has taught him all his life, and if he has a heart.
What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to emotion/ethics.
Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to emotion because he’s making him angry by questioning him but its also appeal to ethics because its making Achilles think about what phoenix is saying and he’s wondering if he’s doing the right thing.

What pages and lines: Page 268 Lines 598-614
Who is speaking: Phoenix is speaking.
What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: Phoenix is speaking to Achilles. He’s telling him to learn how to forgive or else a lot of bad things will happen to him and he’s going to carry that anger with him for ever so its better to let it go now before its too late.
What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to ethics/reason.
Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to ethics because Achilles needs to decide weather he should forgive Agamemnon or not and its appeal to reason because he has to pick if its better for him to just stop being angry and go to war and accept all the gifts.

What pages and lines: Page 273 Lines 777-785
Who is speaking: Phoenix is speaking.
What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: He’s speaking to Achilles he’s telling him to respect his people, family, father, and himself.
What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to ethics.
Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to ethics because Achilles needs to think about what he’s doing and decide weather sitting out is the best thing to do because he needs to respect and make his decision fast.

Iliad assignment Book 9 pp. 251-266

Iliad assignment Book 9 pp. 251-266

  1. Question: Do you think Achilles will accept Agamemnon’s offer?
  2. My opinion on Agamemnon does change in away after reading Book 9. This is because in book 1 Agamemnon is very prideful he went to Troy thinking that he was going to win the war for sure that it was going to be a really easy war. But now he realized that he loosing the war. That he needs Agamemnon and his pride and honor is slowly going away. He is going to apologize to Achilles he’s practically begging him to fight for him and giving him prizes but Achilles doesn’t want to accept them. He has turned into a coward because he wants to go back to Greece and just stop the war because he’s about to loose to the Trojans.
  3. Persuasive Strategies:

What pages and lines: Page 256 Lines 187-193

Who is speaking: Agamemnon is speaking

What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: He is talking to Nestor he tells him that he will give Achilles lots of gifts only if he ends his anger and admits that Agamemnon is a better man and a better king.

What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to emotion.

Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of that because he’s trying to convince Achilles and Nestor that he as in Agamemnon is a better man and king. Also he’s being stubborn and trying to make the mad because he knows Achilles does not believe this and he’s very prideful too.

What pages and lines: Page 252 Lines 30-35

Who is speaking: Agamemnon is speaking

What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: Hes speaking to all the Argives he tells them to leave Troy and to go back to Greece, because they will never win or take over Troy.

What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy is appeal to reason.

Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to reason because Agamemnon is trying to convince all the Greeks to leave Troy, before they die and loose the war.

What pages and lines: Page 260 lines 309-315

Who is speaking: Odysseus is speaking

What does the person say and to whom does he say it to: He’s speaking to Achilles he’s saying that he is messed up for letting his friends die. Also to think about how his father would feel and the advice he gave him.

What persuasive strategy is it: The strategy of appeal to ethics.

Why it is an example of that strategy: This is an example of appeal to ethics because it gets Achilles thinking of sitting out the war and if it’s really the right thing to do at this point.

Iliad Reflection – Book One

Iliad Reflection – Book One
Question: If you were an ancient Greek, which of the following statements would you agree with A or B?
A) Achilles’ rage is justified and I support his decision not to fight, even if it means the Greeks might lose lots of men, or even the war itself.
B) Agamemnon is the commander, as such he is in the right, and I support his decision to ask for Achilles’ war prize Briseis – even if it means that Achilles will sit out the war.

If I was an ancient Greek I would agree with Achilles rage because he has what it takes to be a leader. Agamemnon is a coward because he sends people to take care of his own business. So he doesn’t have the whole package to be a leader. “Never once did you arm with the troops and go to battle or risk an ambush packed with Achaea’s picking men-you lack the courage, you can see death coming.” (pg.85) I would agree with him even if it meant that lots of Greeks would die. This is because then it would mean that Agamemnon’s soldiers weren’t trained good enough, and if they see there leader not doing anything then why would they.

Disagreements and Fights

Disagreements and Fights
“I got money in the bank shorty what you drank” I heard my cell phone ring that was my ring tone. So I picked up and it was my best friend. We talked and she told me that some girl was talking about me and she was saying this and that. I got really mad because I knew this person. So I told her I was going to call her back instead I came to her house and we got ready. I remember putting on my black baggy Dickies. With a white airbrushed t-shirt that said “Shy Girl” in old English writing, and my Nike Cortez’s. My friend was wearing the same except her t-shirt said “Bouncy” We started walking down the street heading straight to that girls house. When we arrived to her house we saw that her mom’s car wasn’t there we knew she was alone and we caught her off guard. We just wanted to give her a little scare and show her that no one messes with us. So we knocked on the door and then ran and ducked so she wouldn’t see who was knocking. Then she slowly opened the door and peeked a little then fully opened it. That’s when me and bouncy popped out of no where. We went up to her and we started talking all this crap. She had used personal things to insult me but they weren’t that bad only one person knows all my secrets and that’s my older sister. So I decided to attack her even harder. The way of doing this is by using her mom and dad. Her dad was dead and her mom was a drunkie. She felt so bad she started to cry. At that I point I knew I had crossed the line. I felt really bad that’s probably one of the only times that I regret saying what I said or even defending myself. It got to the point I said sorry and actually meant it.

Revised Descriptive Writing Assignment

Revised Descriptive Writing Assignment
I look out my window and I saw the fire men coming toward my house. They looked at me with confusion and hatred in their eyes. I can see the hot red fire in their black eyes it looks so real like if it was a reflection of what is about to happen. I’m not sure what they were so mad I’m not ready to leave my books behind or to give them up but I know I can’t run away with them. I can feel the blood rushing through my veins as if there in a hurry to get home. My knees start shaking in terror. My heart is pounding, I feel like it’s about to jump out of my heart not of joy but of disappointment. I’m not willing to give up my beliefs and just let all my knowledge go to waist as if its not important so I know what I have to do I have to stick up for my beliefs. Then I hear the door bell ring. Not really knowing what’s going to happen to me I walk with fear in my legs to the door. It feels like I’m walking up a mountain with all this weight on me it feels like I can never get to the door. I see it so far but it’s actually so close. When I turn that door knob ready to open something tells me not to but I do it anyway. I turn that cold silver knob slowly and then you hear a squeaky noise like when you walk up old stair but it’s actually the door opening. It finally opened and I see him there. It’s like the nightmare everyone wishes they will never have. His boss tells him what to do but I knew what I had to do. I just stood there like a hard stone that could not move not even with the most powerful and strong men pushing on me. Then I see the lighter he’s about to drop it I know this is the last noon that I my eyes will ever get to see. My life is over.

Austin I liked your blog entry because it explains exactly why you got mad a t Michael. But I was kind of confused on what got you mad at the beginning because I didn’t know if Downloading the Virus got you mad or not being able to download it but either way it was a good blog entry.
Daniel I liked your blog because you explain what gets you mad and show examples. I can relate to your blog because I’m Mexican and I know its get annoying when people think this about us, it gets me mad too. And its not only people at school who say it. It is all over the U.S. and TV. Its also true how all people are different and race doesn’t matter.

My Rage- Cause

My Rage- Cause
I still remember that day when my best friend and I started walking down the block. All we were doing was going to the park to have fun. There’s nothing wrong with that right? When two of my friends and my older sister popped out of no where we said hi to each other and started walking all together. When we were about to cross the street my best friends mom pulled up in the Expedition. Her mom started going crazy on us she had followed us from my house. Her mom thought we were going to hook up with my friends and do things we were not suppose to at the park. When all we were doing was talking we didn’t even plan to meet them but she didn’t believe us. I hated how she started judging my friend with out even knowing them or taking the time to ask what we were doing. Next thing I know she’s blaming all these things on me. Saying she’s going to press charges on me for no reason. That I’m going to go to jail along with my sister because that’s were we belong. That me and my sister where just too little bad asses. That I’m nothing more than a gang member and a flirt to everyone. That I had no future. That it was my fault her daughter was the way she was. Ever since that day I have never seen my best friend again. I talked to her once or twice on the phone with out her mom knowing. I call her house and if her mom picks up I have to hang up or else ill end up in jail or at least that’s what she says. This is all because she miss judge me and now I cant talk to her daughter. I do miss her. I and she had been through so much together we had so many good times and now I feel like half of me is gone. Everything got thrown away. So much happened in so little time. Ever since that day I changed a lot I went the wrong path and now its up to me to change it. And I have learned that getting mad takes me no where but into trouble.

Descriptive Writing Assignment (Dread Blogs)

Descriptive Writing Assignment (Dread Blogs)
Descriptive Words On My Dread Blog:
1. Evil-It’s a scary word and it describes how the place is.
2. Dark- It gives you an example of how the place is.
3. Weak- This was a good word in the sentence because it was descriptive and it was better than just saying tired.
Descriptive Words On Group Dread Blogs:
1. Austin I liked this paragraph because you have no clue what you hate until you get to the end. For example at first I thought it was a pencil but then I figured it was a book. Bad Smell- this was descriptive because it used the 5 senses.
2. Daniel I liked this blog because it is very descriptive you have really good words in here. And you had the 5 senses witch helped me imagine and feel what was going on. Also I liked your topic I think fear itself was very good.
Ice Cubes - I liked this simile because instead of saying it was cold ice cubes made it seem more realistic and interesting.
3. Kevin your blog was very good it was very descriptive. Even though your never going to get a date with Jessica Alba or Pamela Anderson you can keep on dreaming. I liked how you used similes like nails scratching on chalkboard instead of a bad noise. I also liked the noises you used like “BEEP, CRUNCH, BLAH, AND WAKE UP”

2/6 - Hesiod Writing Assignment

2/6 - Hesiod Writing Assignment
Question: What universal needs or desires are represented in this story?
What needs/desires might be particular to the Greeks?
Answer: In this story some of needs and desires are power, reproduction, leadership, strength, brave, evil, ruler, and revenge. Some needs and desires that might be specifically for Greeks might be leadership, power, and strength. The reason I chose these words are because of things that the gods did that made me feel like they had to have some evil, revenge, and strength to do. For example someone would never lock up there kids, or eat them, or even kill it was as if they were fighting over ruler ship witch they were because they always wanted to be the best and greatest god.

Descriptive Writting (Frightening Scene)

During page 35-45 there was a good scene where the lady gets killed when she gets burned with her house because of books. This was a good scene because other characters would have been scared to die like she did. So they would of probably left there books and saved them self’s. This scene was also good because it was very descriptive like when its burning by saying everything was musty blackness instead of there was smoke.

Descriptive Words:
1. Musty (pg. 36)
2. Blackness (pg. 36)
3. White Pigeon (pg. 37)

5. Poison (pg. 41)
